He was the first and foremost disciple of Utd. Abdul Karim Khan and guru of Bharat Ratna laureate Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. Pt. Gandharva is most well known for popularizing the stylings of the Kirana Gharana through his accomplished disciples, including Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Dr. Gangubai Hangal, Firoz Dastur, and Pt. Basavaraj Rajguru.

The Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav is amongst the largest and most popular musical festivals of Indian Classical music in India.

Held annually in the city of Pune, Maharashtra, the festival was founded by the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal and Pt. Bhimsen Joshi in 1953 as a tribute to commemorate the life, legacy, and achievements of Pt. Sawai Gandharva, a legendary Indian Classical vocalist who died the year before.

After Pt. Bhimsen Joshi's death in January 2011, the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal decided the name of the festival to the "Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav" in honor of the legendary vocalist.

Artists are invited from various parts of India to present their music at the festival. This festival is the debut platform for many upcoming artists. rformance at the festival connotes their "arrival" to the Classical music scene of India. Over the last five decades, generations of Pune's musical specialist have grown up with and savor the memorable performances at the festival by great musical maestros.
